Dates are one of the few fruits that keep well for a long time. Still, how you store them decides whether they stay soft and glossy or turn dry, sticky or sour. Here is how we recommend keeping your MadinaDates.pk order at its best.
1. Move them into an airtight container
Once you open the box, move the dates you will not finish soon into a clean, airtight container or a zip-lock bag. Air dries dates out, and it also lets them pick up smells from the kitchen. Glass jars and good plastic containers both work well.
2. Cupboard, fridge or freezer?
- Cupboard (cool, dry and away from sunlight): fine for the dates you will eat in the next few weeks. Keep them away from the stove and from sunny windows.
- Fridge: the best place for longer storage, especially for soft, moist varieties like Safawi and Mejdool. In an airtight container they usually stay fresh for several months.
- Freezer: ideal for bulk orders. Divide the dates into smaller containers so you only take out what you need. They soften again in about an hour at room temperature.
3. Soft dates and semi-dry dates
Soft, moist dates such as Safawi and Mejdool are happiest in the fridge, especially in Pakistan’s warm months. Semi-dry dates such as Ajwa and Ambar cope with the cupboard a little better, but they too last longer when kept cool.
4. Serve them at room temperature
Cold dates feel firm and their flavour is muted. Take out what you need 20 to 30 minutes before serving, and they will be soft and full of flavour again.
5. White spots: natural sugar or spoilage?
Small white spots or a slightly crunchy, sugary coating are usually natural sugar that has crystallised on the surface. This is harmless and common in dates that have been kept cool, and it often softens again at room temperature.
Throw dates away if you see fuzzy mould, notice a sour or alcohol-like smell, or find any insects. When in doubt, leave it out.
6. Tips for bulk orders
If you have ordered 5kg, 10kg or 20kg for Ramadan or an event:
- Keep the main stock in the fridge or freezer, in several smaller containers.
- Keep only one or two days’ supply on the table.
- Serve with clean, dry hands or a spoon, so moisture does not get into the container.
- Write the date on each container and use the oldest first.
With these simple habits, the last date from your order will taste as good as the first. Need to restock? You will find every variety in our shop, and larger quantities on our Bulk Orders page.
