Walk into any date market in Madina and you will see dozens of varieties, each with its own colour, size and taste. At MadinaDates.pk we bring four of the most loved ones to Pakistan: Ajwa, Safawi, Mejdool and Ambar. If you are not sure which to choose, this guide will help.
Ajwa: the blessed date
Ajwa is the most cherished date of Madina. It is small to medium in size, deep black to blackish-brown, with soft flesh and a fine, slightly dry skin. The taste is mildly sweet, never sugary, with a gentle, almost earthy depth.
Ajwa holds a special place for Muslims because the Prophet ﷺ spoke of it in a well-known hadith:
“Whoever starts his day by eating seven Ajwa dates will not be harmed by poison or magic on that day.”
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
Best for: a few dates every morning, gifts for elders, and anyone who prefers a mild sweetness. Shop Ajwa dates
Safawi: dark and delicately sweet
Safawi dates are dark, almost black, and noticeably softer and moister than Ajwa. They have a rich, smooth sweetness that makes them easy to love, even for children who are new to dates.
Best for: daily snacking, iftar, and families who want great value without compromising on quality. Shop Safawi dates
Mejdool: the king of dates
Mejdool (often spelled Medjool) is the largest of the four. Each date is plump and juicy, with a soft, chewy texture and a deep, caramel-like sweetness. Because they are so generous in size, two or three Mejdool dates feel like a small dessert.
Best for: special occasions, stuffing with nuts, serving to guests and filling gift boxes. Shop Mejdool dates
Ambar: the light, elegant one
Ambar dates are long and slender, with an amber-brown colour, a dry surface and a soft, tender inside. Their sweetness is lighter than most varieties, with a rich, earthy flavour, so they never feel heavy.
Best for: people who prefer less sweetness, eating with tea or coffee, and long fasting days. Shop Ambar dates
